Changez! een Belgenshow paints a picture of a flourishing generation Belgian artists in a weekly changing setup.

As Belgium-enthusiast I noticed that a young generation Belgian artists produce strong works that are barely shown in the Netherlands. This led to Changez! een Belgenshow. The exhibition gave an impression of that generation of artists. The concept of the exhibition provided a critical yet playful comment on the phenomenon of the ′nation state exhibition′. I invited artists who live and work in Belgium but who don’t necessarily own a Belgian passport. For example two Germans, a Luxembourg, an American, a Dutchman, an Icelander and a Syrian participated. The exhibition was not about Belgian identity neither about Belgium. To do justice to the dynamics of the art scene as well as to stress that this selection was merely my personal choice and certainly not untouchable, I came up with the weekly change.

Changez! kicked off with work by ten artists. From that moment on there was a weekly change in order to replace the work of one artist for that by another. In other words, every week the image of this generation shifted. At the end of the exhibition period there was a completely different exhibition than at the start. Due to the weekly changes the emphasis in the exhibition altered constantly and established alternating connections between the artworks. A number of artists are focused on perception, others have renewed interest in abstraction. Art itself or the medium is under scrutiny. Some draw inspiration from subculture, others loosely reinterpret aspects of Belgian culture. The work of the Antwerp artists often has a humorous slant. Changez! found much resonance in the media.

In addition to Changez! I also made exhibitions in 21rozendaal with Bruno Peinado, Wendy Morris and Het Harde Potlood.
